The Unexpected Journey
Finding Strength, hope, and yourself on the caregiving path
By Emma Heming Willis

In "The Unexpected Journey" Emma Heming Willis offers a poignant and deeply personal narrative that delves into the complexities of caring for a loved one with dementia. Known to many as the wife of Bruce Willis, the iconic actor from films like Armageddon and the Die Hard series, Emma steps into the spotlight with her own story. Bruce, now 70, was officially diagnosed in 2022 with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a type of dementia that profoundly impacts language, movement and behaviour.
Emma and Bruce's journey began with their marriage in 2009, and since 2023, Emma has taken on the role of Bruce's full-time care partner. Her book, The Unexpected Journey, is a candid exploration of the trials and tribulations faced by those caring for individuals with dementia, particularly FTD. What sets this book apart is its focus on the caregiver's perspective, likening the experience to running a marathon. Emma shares how dementia has reshaped her life and that of her children, emphasising her resolve to be as prepared as
possible for this arduous journey alongside Bruce.
Emma's narrative does not shy away from the harsh realities of caregiving. She presents an unvarnished account of the daily, often unpredictable challenges posed by dementia. The book can be confrontational, and some readers may find themselves unprepared for the stark advice she offers.
For me, reading this book was an emotional experience. There were moments when I found myself moved to tears as Emma vividly depicted the gradual loss of a loved one over time. Next to those who are care partners for those living with dementia, I also wholeheartedly recommend "The Unexpected Journey" to family and friends of caregivers supporting someone with dementia. It serves as a powerful reminder of the compassion and support needed to
accompany them on their "marathon".
The book is available in New Zealand at Paper Plus and online at various merchants. There
are also some interviews available on YouTube for you to watch.
